Another Laurie Andeson clip - reminded me of "Man of Steel - Woman of Kleenex" for some reason...

Is there any way to save youtube videos as files?

Never used it, but there's a plug-in for Firefox:

https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/2254/

Then you can re-encode the flv files to mpegs with:

http://www.rivavx.com/?encoder

But again, never used, so I can't vouch for.

OK, turns out that there's an Opera widget called videodownloader that does the same thing as the Mozilla plugin, and the Riva encoder seems to work although it's pretty slow. Many thanks!

It did strike me as odd that downloading and saving youtube videos was made as difficult as it is.

Same VideoDownloader is also available for Firefox/Flock. It's what I use.

Is that DownloadHelper? I use that to save them as .flv files. If I started converting them to mpegs, I'd probably run out of time in my life.

It's pretty slow, but it'll run in the background if I'm doing something else. Took about four or five minutes to do Oh Superman.

No, Videodownloader:

https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/2390/

Saves it as an Flash movie file, just as it is embedded. No loss of quality from the original. Works pretty good. All you need is an offline Flash movie viewer, but there are plenty of those.

This works: http://www.arrakis.es/~rggi3/youtube-dl/

At least MPlayer on Linux can play them. Probably on windows too.

OK, either I'm missing something or there's no way to cut and paste URLs from Windows to Python, which is something that makes this a little hard to use. I'll look for another answer, I think.

What's wrong with command line? You can paste URLs even in windows' (crappy) shell.

Well, it turns out I've found another way to do it - see separate comment above.
