Got an alert message from Norton telling me it had detected a worm and blocked it. Didn't think much of it, until I realised that I couldn't go on line. So after checking the modem etc. I looked at the alerts in Norton and found this:

Intrusion detected and blocked. All communication with xxx.xxx.x.x will be blocked for 30 minutes.

Needless to say xxx.xxx.x.x was my bloody router! Also needless to say, there was no way to unblock it, as far as I could see!

Fortunately I worked this out in time to get on line via my laptop and bid on the item I wanted on ebay, which was my reason for wanting to go on line in the first place. A cheapo webcam is now mine.

I have a couple more months of "protection" paid for from Norton, after which I intend to switch over to AVG. Every time I think Norton's crappiness has ceased to surprise me, it does something like this and astounds me again.

Just switch to AVG today. It'll save you headaches.

I'm sorely tempted - but I want to register AVG so it will cost me money.

Ah. I use the free version without any problems.

That's a possibility, of course - one of the reasons why I'm delaying is to see if I run into any problems with the free version on my other PC, so far there aren't any (apart from a problem with Gmail which I suspect is a quirk of that PC rather than AVG).

I use both Gmail and AVG and have had no problems at all. Combine AVG with Ad-Aware SE, Spybot Search & Destroy and ZoneAlarm Free, and you don't need Norton at all.

I've not used Norton products in 8 years because they became notorious resource hogs and caused more problems than they fixed. When I performed tech support we always ended up having to disable Norton to fix issues, and sometimes even had to uninstall it because it was what was causing the issues themselves.

Yes, that's about the impression I've got - but I'm going to take my time about it just to be on the safe side.

Always better to be safe than sorry.
