Following the eclipse I decided to bite the bullet and look for a good digital SLR, and just got myself a 2nd hand Nikon D50 body and Tamron 28-300mm lens on eBay. Vendor is a local shop I've dealt with before, so I'm reasonably confident it'll be as advertised. Can't pick it up tonight, but hopefully tomorrow. Once I've checked it out I'll need to start thinking about a flash and microscope adaptor, maybe a wider lens eventually. Anyone got any suggestions on flash for this? Probably mainly for macro, and possibly some baby photos, portraits, etc., I'm not going to be doing rock concerts or anything that needs huge amounts of power.

The Nikon SB-600 flashgun is probably beyond your price range (it's around £150) but the great thing about it is that it can be used wirelessly off-camera.
Metz and Sigma make good flashguns that work with Nikons and are usually cheaper.

£150 is more than I'll be able to afford for a while, what I need for the time being is something pretty basic.

Weird dearth of microscope adaptors on offer - only one on eBay UK and it's pentax screw - I suppose I'll have to look at Jessups or Nikon themselves.
