news has something useful to say - paid and permanent users can now switch off the receipt of virtual gifts, with an option to switch off just the sponsored ones or all of them. This is controlled from the Viewing Options panel on the user information page. Ironically news still hasn't done this and is still displaying rather a lot of pepsi cans...
What I don't know is what happens if someone tries to send someone a paid vgift after they've switched them off. Hopefully the system checks before taking cash, but it'd be a bit of a rip-off if they just vanished into limbo.
Later - tried it from another account, you get an error message before the money is taken.
