Not sure how good an offer this is:

New Mac Mini G4 / 1.25GHz / 256MB / 40GB for £ 279.99 inc VAT

Says the operating system is Tiger, which of course isn't the latest, it's a PowerPC processor rather than the Intel one, and there's no screen, keyboard or mouse. Not something I'd want myself, unless the spec was considerably better, but maybe there's someone out there who can use something like this at this price.

My advice: don't bother. Entry level retail price on the current mac mini (which is hitting end of line, implying they're about to replace it) is £399 -- which is for a Core 2 Duo machine clocked at 1.83GHz, with about triple the performance, four times the memory (1Gb) and double the disk space (80Gb).

You can probably get an intel mac mini on eBay for about the same price as this old boiler (which has been out of production for over a year, IIRC).

About what I thought - If I continue to go the Mac route I'll certainly be looking for Wintel compatibility, so this is no use for me anyway.

There is a massive void between the PowerPC and the Intel version.

I would, given the choice stick with Intel. They know what they are doing.

The price is nice, but you have to think about a Mac Mini as a laptop, there is very little you can do to upgrade it.

But ultimately, it depends on what you intend to do with the machine that counts.

Pretty much what I thought - and right now I really can't afford another PC anyway.

Yeah, what he said. This isn't a good price on this equipment, and I'm not sure how valuable it is at all unless you're wedded to the PowerPC chipset.

Not wedded - my iBook uses it but I'd want Intel and the Windows option if I got another Mac.

Any news on the Dragonmeet front?

I won't be able to make it this year. But if you've got The Mighty Kovalic do you really need any another Americans?

Apparently, yes: the US representation seems pretty good this year!

One of the snags of running games at Dragonmeet is that I rarely get to see much of the programme, but with a bit of luck I'll get to say "Hi" to John at some point. Probably just as he's leaving, or I am...

This is quite high compared to what you will pay on Ebay.

1.25Ghz PPC ones are going for 150.00 and Intel ones starting at about 180.00 upwards. Yes it's new but with a new Mac @Nano@ desktop due soon it is not a decent buy. Expect to see refurbished Minis hitting the onlien Apple store soon as they clear lines for the updated "sekret" replacement

Aside from that it only has a combo drive and DVD is the standard these days.

All true. It's a shame, because the dealer is usually pretty good value, but this time definitely not.
