The livejournal elections are getting silly, and we seem to have our first conspiracy theory.

http://jameth.livejournal.com/4366788.html?nc=86

Since I suspect my comment will be lost in the crowd, I'm repeating it here:

Reading this, I really have to ask how credible this story is. Players with several thousand livejournal accounts and email addresses, all via different ISPs etc? Who the hell has the time to do something like that, or the organizational skills to keep track, and WTF would they bother since this would have all had to have been set up months ago? If they're doing this, and actively monitoring so many accounts for their RPGs, how do they find time to eat, or go to the bathroom?

I have no doubt that there will be a few multiple votes - I also have no doubt that they will be spread fairly evenly amongst the candidates. But something on this scale is a fairy tale, made up by someone who knows that most people won't bother to do the math and realise just how stupid the idea is. Falling for it does you no credit.

[Grins] I wouldn't worry about it. Unfortunately, they seem to have a problem distinguishing between the possible and the probable. Is it possible that legomymalfoy/rm/vichan did this? Yes, in the same way it’s possible that I’m really Osama Bin Laden, with a secret fondness for fanfiction and a proxy internet connection.

Is it probable?

Um, not so much.

But [livejournal.com profile] jameth already knows his, as he is the one who started the mud slinging in the first place by implying that [livejournal.com profile] legomymalfoy was personally using sockpuppets a few days back ( an anonymous tip told him, don’t you know!) After that, it was Chinese whispers and a screencap of two teenaged fangirls/fanboys talking about using an RPG journal to vote (one succeeded I believe, but so did a few from [livejournal.com profile] jameth’s side, too - and I've also noted he's 'edited' that post in the last 24 hours.

It's same old, same old…oh. Look at the dorky fanfic writers/ RPG players, we’ll just mock them and bully them from the safe confines of out homes (because none of them would do this in real life – at least, I hope so!)

And I've just chacked his LJ and he's finally done it - played the Harry Potter Slash Peadophile card. I guess he figured he was going to loose anyway, he might as well play it to the hilt (although as someone who professes to be gay, you'd think he'd see the inherent dodginess of inferring slash and paedophile are the same thing - he should have stuck with just saying it was all about under age sex :-P)

Let the games begin!

P.S. And that is my last edit - promise!

P.P.S Oops

Technically it would be pretty easy, actually. And not terribly time consuming, either. You should see the crazy-ass things people do to stuff the ballots for All-Star voting, and they don't even start caring about multiple votes until you've voted 25 times.

Sure, they could do it - but did they create verified livejournal accounts several months ago to be eligible to vote now? Possibly there are a few around, but I suspect that the original claim is is wildly exaggerated.

He's not accusing his opponent of being a slash paedophile, or even saying that there's anything wrong with it if there was! No, no... he's just pointing out that some people have noticed that his opponent is a slash paedophile - though he can't really comment on it himself - and what sort of image would that send to people? Not that there's anything wrong with it, but the public might perceive it as being creepy and immoral, even monstrous. And then where would we be?

I wasn't going to vote. I just did, so as not to vote for Jameth.

Imagine you're an active roleplayer. Then imagine that for every character you create you create a LJ account. How many LJ accounts would you have?

For most of the roleplayers I know probably ten or twelve at most. I suppose there are people around who have a dozen characters for every game and play loads of different games, but they tend to be in the munchkin camp. Most of the people I play with tend to favour character development, which doesn't really go well with running dozens of different characters.

I was in a livejournal RPG for a while (dropped out because most of the players seemed to think that roleplaying = bad porn written by alternating authors) but even there if I remember correctly the most characters any one player was running was three.

Ah, of course, this is an important distinction to make.

*Rolls eyes*

I wonder how big the protest vote is? Huge, I'd say.
