OK - a lot that was unexpected but holy crap, that was good. No spoilers apart from two words.

Cloister bell.

Later edit - from Wikipedia:

Cloister bell
An alarm that tolls, in the manner of a heavy church bell, in the TARDIS to warn the crew of impending disaster. First heard in Logopolis, it rings again in Castrovalva, Resurrection of the Daleks, the 1996 television movie, the 2005 Children in Need special, "The Sound of Drums," "Time Crash" and "Turn Left".

Four words (thrice):

Evil of the Daleks. Time travel using mirrors. Old school shout out.

Favourite moment in the episode was Wilf's terrified and bewildered exclamation of "oh my gawd, the stars are goin' out!" Brilliant acting by all concerned, especially Donna's mum collapsing into apathy and depression as she began to grasp the enormity of what had happened. But that one bit by Bernard Cribbins nearly broke my heart, as this poor sod tried desperately to grasp the latest twist in a world gone quietly mad.
