If anyone remembers the old Atari game Tempest, there's an excellent and astonishingly small by modern standards (about a 5mb download) freeware clone of it for Windows and Linux - Typhoon 2001.

Hardware requirements aren't too drastic, but you do need a reasonably fast graphics card. I've installed it on the PC I use for video files etc., it's pretty amazing on a 40" screen.

This was another one I found via http://www.freedownloadaday.com/

Serious retro fun, thanks for that.

Annoyingly I haven't been able to find a good Battlezone clone, which is one I'd REALLY like.

That would be nice. I had one on my phone for a while!

Yeah Battlezone was great and one of the few arcade games I was really good at.

It was a classic game and when they launched an "updated" version a few years back I was initially hopeful, but it turned out to be a combat simulator / command and control game with no similarity apart from the name.

Yeah I was disappointed with the concept of the re-make too. Aside from Micropose's "M1 Tank Platoon" I haven't found any really good tank sims.
