Oh yeah! The only thing that could compare is someone finding more than little excerpts of Just Imagine, the 1930 musical about the future.

That's the one they lifted all the rocketship scenes for "Flash Gordon" from, wasn't it?

I think so. Allegedly not particularly good but I'd love to see it.

How strange, I wonder what the story behind that might be. I can't help but notice it surfaced in Buenos Aires... didn't lots of ex-Nazis escape to there after the war?

There were plenty of Germans living there prior to the war too. It's quite concievable that it was imported there for German audiences to enjoy in the 20's. That still doesn't explain how it could still be in any sort of watchable condition after all these years though.

I'm thinking it must have been in somebodies private collection, and perhaps they died and the private collection became known?

There has to be an interesting story behind it.

I suspect a LOT of digital processing will be involved.

Read the Zeit article linked from the page. It has the story of how the film ended up there. Nothing to do with fleeing Nazis.

Oh yes, curses, yet again reality fails to live up to my fanciful conspiracy theory laden vision. :)

Fantastic news! My only hope is that it doesn't urn out to be like "Tomb of the Cybermen", where we waited for years to have this "lost classic" turn up, only to find out that it actually wasn't that great.

If they have any sense they'll include one of the shorter cuts in the same release.

Metropolis, that's that scary silent movie, isn't it?. (Obviously I've never seen it :D)

You can thank Freddie Mercury for me knowing anything about Metropolis. The song Love Kills was from the soundtrack to the re-release.

There's some very good music on the re-release.

Yeah the album Giorgio Moroder put together for the movie is one of my favorites. I was lucky enough to have caught Brian Blessed in the stage production of "Metropolis" in 1990 (my only visit to London). Very impressive set and pretty good music too.

I saw that on AICN last night and couldn't believe it. Metropolis is such an important piece of cinema and genre history, and to actually find it like that is amazing! I'm looking forward to seeing it.

I'd imagine a minimum of a couple of years for scanning and digital remastering.
