I've ordered a copy of Corel Draw 12 - if it doesn't translate my old files it's too bad, I can continue to use Micrografx for the older stuff if needs be. But I get the impression that for the sort of accurate work I want to do Corel is probably a better bet.

If you have questions while learning it, feel free to e-mail me -- my address is in my profile. As one of the other commenters mentioned, it's not got a learning curve so much as a learning cliff. Mind you, now that I've scaled the cliff myself, you'd have to pry it out my cold, dead hands....

Thanks for the offer, if you're not careful I may take you up on it!

I did use it a few times at work, for things like switch logos on decade resistance boxes; my impression is that it's more complicated than Micrografx, but not totally different. Hopefully I'll pick it up as I go.

Corel is a good choice as it's incredibly powerful, and certainly not as expensive as Adobe products. I've been using it for years myself, and it's been handing for doing a lot of things.

I've yet to hear a bad thing about it apart from the learning curve, and I'm usually OK in that respect once I've bitten the bullet and paid money for software - I'm a mean bastard.

I've used Corel for years, all the way from version 2. Once you get the hang of how it does things, you can use it for practically anything. Draw is very powerful, as is Photopaint (and a darn fine Photoshop replacement). There's also a nice bundle of fonts that come with it.

The only problems we've ever had have been occasional crashes when there's been some conflicting program running at the same time. Make sure you activate autosave and boost the amount of memory available for the program to use. You'll find that should help a lot.

Thanks, knew there was a reason why I boosted the PC to 2 GB! Since I've run an early version in 256 MB that will hopefully be enough.

Great! I hope it works out well.

If any questions come up while you're learning to use it, give me a shout.

Cool! I use Corel-11 at work and Corel-X3 at home. Yes, the learning curve is tough and I was lucky that my job sent me to training years ago. I mostly use the Photo-Paint side of it but have some experience with the Draw side, too. Let me know if I can help.

Many thanks - looks like I have enough friends with experience of it that any question should be answerable.
