ffutures: (Planets of Peril)

This is the Mars / Space background again but taking on board what people have said about things not looking hand-drawn enough. This is maybe a bit too basic, I'm not 100% sure. The previous effort is on the left, the new one on the right:

I'm not polling this time, but comments on which (if either) you prefer and why would be appreciated.

Remember that these are screen shots and some jaggies have crept in that won't be in the PDF version.

I like the first. The second, newer version is too bright and garish (but only in the bits you changed). Maybe if the whole thing was garish I'd like it more, but it looks unbalanced as it stands. The first one is better.

I like the first one as well.

For one, the writing in the first one is easier on my eyes.

For another, the spaceship POPS more in the first. In the second, you've added a lot of color and such but it doesn't actually pop much in the angle/position it's been put.

Also, as a note, it looks a little odd in "Peril"; because of the way it's done, it almost looks a little like "Perii" or "Peru" at a quick glance.

I think the first one looks better, the second spaceship is just too garish. However, I think the positioning looks better in the second.
I can see where you are going with the brighter green on the main text, makes it stand out more, but it still needs the shadowing you have in the first to make it more 3D, it looks flat without the gradient shading.

The first version is much better. The green shadowing on the letters doesn't work; black is much better. However the lettering in green, with black shadowing, might work better still. The second spaceship is too garish - but the first spaceship is perhaps a little too dark. Something between the two might be best.

I prefer the first version. The color of the spaceship in the second looks unnatural and cartoony. And it also makes the spaceship jump out too sharply from the background, weakening the emphasis on Mars; if your title is "Planets of Peril," I think you should give pride of place to an actual planet. Though it might be worth considering an image of Jupiter or Saturn as an alternative, if you can access one.

Somewhere between the two is probably the best. The green in the new one is a bit too garish but I like the lack of shading. I don't mind the rocket in the second too much.

I'm with the rest of them; the first one is better. The combination of the green letter-shadow and blue highlit spaceship is too much, and manages to look a lot less like a magazine cover.

First one

The green in the second is too overwhelming and the rocket looks like a cross between a hugo award and a light saber.

I prefer the one on the left. The two bright areas of colour are too much of a hit in the eye and the less colourful cover looks to me (who knows nothing about the covers of the period) to be older in style and thus more appropriate.
