Back in August I shut down my former web site (hosted by Cedant) and made repeated attempts to get Cedant to acknowledge that I wanted to close my account with them. I also deleted my credit card details from their site (I hope).

This morning I received a billing statement from them. It remains to be seen if they have somehow retained my credit card details - I've sent them a message saying that if they do charge my card I'm going to report it as card fraud.

A lot of companies seem to operate on the basis that they don't expect people to check their statements/credit card bills.

I've run into this too. I contacted my bank and asked that the company involved be prevented from charging my card. To my astonishment I was told that they could not do this! That once you sign an authorisation for a company to debit your card they (the bank) can't legally refuse to do so! I was told that in order to stop it I had to get the company to agree to stop. Fortunately I found that (a number of increasingly irate phone calls later) I was able to do that. Not sure if the Aussie rules are the same elsewhere of course.

I feel that there are severe problems with this arrangement. Obviously the thing is going to expire when your credit card is replaced and you refuse to give them a new authorisation but otherwise the only way to fix it is to cancel the card (or pretend to lose it & have it replaced). It begs for better legislation IMHO.

This is made more complicated by the fact that it's all on line - no letters have ever been exchanged, and in fact I didn't originally set up the site - I "inherited" it from Heliograph Inc. - so I suspect their records are a mess.
