SVP started up a "cheap for one day" web site. Not convinced that it's going to be wonderful value, but today's offer is interesting (but not something I actually want), a reconditioned Elonex Webbook for £210 plus postage, 512mb, 80gb HD. Unfortunately it's bigger and heavier than I want and the battery life is only 2.5 hours, which isn't ideal for this class of computer, and the guarantee is only 90 days. But if you want a small Linux portable there are much crapper ones around...

Not so sure that is as good a deal as it might have been a few weeks ago. A lot of the netbooks released earlier this year have dropped quite a bit in price. So, for example, you could buy an Acer Aspire One A150-Aw Netbook (Linux, 1GB RAM, 120GB HD) for only £2 more than the Elonex from Amazon.co.uk (http://www.amazon.co.uk/Acer-Aspire-One-Netbook-Seashell/dp/B001BZ924I/ref=sr_1_5?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1227276534&sr=8-5) (once delivery is included). The Acer has twice the memory, 40GB more disk, a half hour more battery life (3 vs. 2.5 hours) and a faster processor (Atom N270 vs. VIA C7-M). Though granted, it costs an additional £5 more if you want it in black. I'm really tempted to buy one of these, if only I could think of the slightest justification for spending the money, sigh.

I'd be very interested if I didn't already own a laptop - what I actually want is something a little smaller, more like a PDA with a lot of the same capabilities, which is why I'm not really current on the latest prices on this stuff.
