On Saturday I had a look at the figures on offer at the Salute wargames con (don't have much to say about the con since I was feeling lousy, didn't play anything, and left early). Space suited figures seem to be as rare as hen's teeth, and usually ridiculously heavily armoured - Games Workshop's Chaos death spikey giant shoulder pads have a lot to answer for - and when I thought about it I realised that I'd mostly need figures in "normal" clothing. Also in fairly short supply, of course, especially at a wargames con.

But eventually I found these plastic models on a stall selling second hand figures:

They have pretty much the look I was after - adventurers in a variety of costumes, not ridiculously heavily armed. They're ready painted, not incredibly well but good enough for a demo game, with a 1950s SF look that should work for the Weinbaum universe. They're actually collectible miniatures from some sort of Star Wars game - don't know what it's called - made by a company called LFL. Most of these are apparently common and were priced at 50p second hand, with a couple at a pound. They look to be about 28mm scale, and (apart from the lack of female figures) are more or less what I want.

I also got a couple of humanoid aliens, which need some head modifications to look human which I'm still working on. One is a woman in a purple catsuit which will do quite nicely as a spacesuit sans helmet, carrying a silly gun, the other is a male figure wearing a heavier suit with jointed armour, carrying an even sillier gun. The woman was originally dark skinned but I want to match a particular Weinbaum character who is blonde, so that is changing.

Anyway, I'm having a lot of trouble finding out about this range - LFL seem to make a lot of different collectible figures, none of which look quite like this lot. Anyone know anything about them?

They're actually made by Wizards of the Coast.

My guess is that LFL = Lucas Film Limited and hence are the copyright holders.

Anyway, you can find out more about them at http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=starwars There have ben 10 sets of 60 miniatures and 2 sets of 40 released for (runs out of fingers) 680 minis total (plus a handful more in special scenario packs). They're normally randomly packed in sealed boxes of 7 so there's a big market on eBay etc.

The ones you have are...

Gosh. I'd never have guessed those were star wars figures.

Many thanks!

Any idea if any of this range wear spacesuits (not stormtrooper /bounty hunter armour)?

Those are miniatures from WotC's Star Wars Miniatures CMG. I own a ton of them. They're generally quite good, and commons and many uncommons can be found on the secondary market for cheap. LFL is, indeed, Lucasfilm Licensing's mark.

Here's a database that has almost all of the currently available miniatures:

http://swshoebox.com/

The Wizards site also has a database that can generate full lists, with pictures, from each set (just pick a set and choose "Gallery View"):

http://www.wizards.com/swminis/swminis_db.asp

Off the top of my head, none of the non-Stormtrooper figures wear /closed/ spacesuits, with helmets. If you look through the gallery and find figures that interest you, you should message me and I may be able to identify some cheap online sellers for you.

I'm almost 100% certain that there's nothing suitably space-suity.

But for a nice retro-feel look out for the Old Republic troopers: http://www.wizards.com/swminis/swminis_db.asp?term=old_republic&output=gallery

Oh yes, they'd be quite good for spaceship officers.

Have you had a look at Ground Zero Games? http://www.gtns.co.uk/store1/commerce.cgi
They were at Salute too apparently.

Yes, but they don't seem to have much in SF-style civilians. Also metal figures are bloody expensive, and the Star Wars ones are pretty much what I want and a lot cheaper.

GZG's 15mm range has 5 packs of space suited figures, including some in zero-g floating poses. Plus several packs of colonists and a not-Serenity-crew pack. The smaller scale is a lot cheaper as well.

But for a demo game I'd go with the larger Star Wars figures.

I have some 15mm Traveller figures - but as you say, too small for a demo game.

I *thought* I saw you at Salute! But you left before I could really convince myself and dare say hi.

And blasted GW blasted shoulderpads... they've spread like an evil plague, afflicting the shoulders of innocent spacefaring chaps across all miniatures-land.

Definitely. Imagine trying to work with an arm above your head wearing that kit!

Apparently "pad slice" is quite a common neck injury amongst armoured spacesuit users.
