Dreamwidth?

I suddenly started to see a lot about Dreamwidth a few days ago, most of it in posts from people who seemed to assume that everyone knew what it was. So I checked the site and found out what it is. It looks like they're saying, at the moment, that there will be no ads and minimal interference from the management, but that, as someone once said, is what they all say.

So why exactly are people already panting for invitations to join another LJ-style service which is apparently still very much in beta test? Good PR, or is there some factor I've missed?

Part of it is that both principals were involved with LJ in the early days and want to get back to that business model, and the other part is that one of the principals is active in fandom. Presumably, things like the strikethrough mess won't happen with fandom-friendly ownership. Also, they're improving the code. On Dreamwidth, you can subscribe to a journal without granting that person access to your own journal, which is great for developing a reading list and is the main reason I'll be transferring my fannish activities to DW. That said, I'll still have an LJ, but it will be focused on RL.

I'm not really mad keen to get involved in beta testing - maybe when it's ready to take subscriptions I'll give it a go.

Good question - one that's been simmering in my mind, but I've not got around to asking it.
