Not really spoilery but cut anyway - where was Sarah Jane Smith, her son, and the other kids in his circle during all this? Can't see SJ giving up Luke very easily, and she'd be a natural contact for Jack in London when Torchwood were hiding out.
Yes, I wondered that too. I guess they didn't want to risk drawing in the younger SJA audience into something that might give them nightmares. Or to have to spend some time explaining to all the new non-Who-verse viewers who Sarah Jane is.
Luke and the rest are past puberty kicking in, though (saved by hormones...) - which of course doesn't explain where they were in the sense of fighting the good fight. I am curious whether we'll get a reference in the next SJA season. (Fanfiction has already been written to the effect she and the kids were on a trip with the Doctor and didn't come back until after.) Doylist-wise, I'd agree that they didn't want to confuse the TW-only audience who might have no idea who Sarah Jane is (since as opposed to Martha, who did get a reference, she never appeared on TW).
Yes, I'd forgotten how age-specific it was. And not confusing the TW audience makes a bit of sense, though I suspect many are from Who fandom and know all about her. There are probably enough that don't know her to be a problem.
