OK, so a 20-minute programme recorded at fairly low resolution saved as a 200mb vob file - what's the easiest way to convert it to something a little more compact?

You can use a program called Handbrake to do the converting. You can find it at http://handbrake.fr/

I use it all the time to rip DVDs and convert other video.

slasher :)

Doesn't seem to run under Tiger - I'll try the windows version later, the Windows PC is tied up on something else right now.

It might be worthwhile investing in Quicktime Pro.

Seems to need driver files that cost money on the mac. I think VLC on the Windows machine may be my best bet.

I'd be surprised if VLC isn't available on the Mac. I think it's just a (rather good) wrapper over ffmpeg

Oh, I've got it on both, but my iBook apparently lacks some of the drivers needed to make MP4 files. I did it on the windows PC easily enough.

For future use, you may want to install Perian.
