ffutures: (avengers)
[personal profile] ffutures
A couple of recent posts have mentioned that Joss Whedon is to direct an Avengers movie.

So, depending on which era, who should they cast? My thoughts are
  • Tony Head as Steed, of course.
  • Summer Glau is maybe a bit young to be Mrs Peel, but maybe if they set it in the New Avengers era she'd be OK as Purdey.
  • And if they did use the New Avengers era Alexis Denisof might be OK as Gambit - or possibly James Marsters though I'm not sure about that one.
Any thoughts on Mother etc?

My guess on villains would be the Cybernauts, high time they got another outing, though of course these days they'd look more human. Multiple Eliza Dushku's?

Note for the literally-minded - I am in fact aware which Avengers JW is directing...

That would be frigging amazing - but, unfortunately, it's the wrong Avengers! [Pouts]

These are the Avengers they're talking about

Sorry to disappoint you, sir, but the Avengers film being discussed is the much-mooted Marvel Comics film... i.e. Captain America, Hulk, Iron Man, Thor etc.

It's been on the planning stage for a while now, hence the crossover/cameos in the last two films (Stark in Hulk, Nick Fury/Samuel L Jackson in Iron Man)... still, it would be good news if Whedon got the job!

Now about those casting ideas... Nathan Fillion as Captain America?

Not disappointed - I'm aware that this time around we're avoiding the desecration of a cherished British cultural icon, thank Cthulhu.

Filion might work as CA if he can do the stunt work, but I don't really see him as that athletic.

Beg your pardon.

Considering how dreadful the 90s Avengers film was, it's probably a blessing.

Although - could you see it working if they rebooted the TV series?

Not really - things have moved on too much.

Wrong Avengers. :D

They mean the Capt America, Iron Man, Thor, Hulk (sometimes), Giant Man (think that's the name), Wasp, untold number of other characters one.

Marvel super-hero team, not the British one.

Junking the JW connection....

Emma Peel / cathy Gale / Tara King possibles:

Carey Mulligan
Georgia Moffett
Sophia Myles.

In fact, after Saturday, I'd say Sophie Okenedo would make an excellent Mrs Peel.

I'd cast myself as Mother. Failing that, Mike McShane, Phill Jupitus... Philip Glenister?

I really don't know - I'm not watching much UK TV these days, apart from Who and Being Human, any of them would work for me I suppose.

Actually you missed the one that was my first thought, Karen Gillan!

Possibly Bill Bailey as Mother? (actually I think the bad movie cast Mother very well, and Uma wasn't a bad idea, if only she'd been more Kill Bill-ish in it) or Peter Firth (Harry Pierce on Spooks)

Trying to think of a good person to play Steed is actually much harder ... Tony Head is ok I suppose, but somehow doesn't make me want to shout "yes". Most of the people I can think of would make a better bad guy than Steed (e.g. John Simm, Simon Pegg, Rupert Penry-Jones (Adam Carter in Spooks)) or are too old or too young. It needs someone with the charisma of Roger Moore and Patrick Macnee, and very few people spring to mind that have that sparkle that don't also come across as far too lightweight or inappropriate. (Lightweight but charismatic people *not* suitable including Jonathan Ross, Richard Hammond, Dale Winton, Graham Norton, Bruce Forsyth, Jack Davenport, John Barrowman, Michael Ball etc. (grin!))

If they did a "younger Avengers", I could just about accept David Tennant or Orlando Bloom.

David Tennant would certainly be a possibility, but he is a bit too young. Jude Law?

Thinking about Gattaca, yes, he'd be good. Though much of the same as the bad film if we're not careful.

Can you imagine Eddie Izzard giving it a go? ... hmmm, can't decide!

I suspect Joss Whedon would like to cast Summer Glau in everything he does. Several times. Including making his breakfast.

OK, Summer Glau as the Cybernauts, but it is type-casting a bit...

Ha, excellent.

Weirdly I think I've seen that action movie that was 30 seconds exposition followed by a 90 minute action scene. That totally forgettable terminator movie. (Or either of the two most recent ones actually.)

If only they'd had Summer in them. I might have liked them then.

Do you mean "Terminator: Revenge of the Fallen", or "Transformers: Salvation"?

Yes, they were that interchangable IMHO.

I have a hard time trying to decide which of the two was more insulting to my intelligence. I think probably Transformers:Salvation, because at least the other one was written out of Canon by the Terminator tv series.

Ummm... Not so sure, the last Avengers revival was pretty dire and I don't think my cast would improve it much.

Tony Head as Steed, Bill Bailey as Mother... I so want to say Eliza Dushku as Emma Peel, but I dunno if she could pull it off...

I think Peel is REALLY difficult to pull off. Maybe Stephanie Romanov (Lilah Morgan) or Tricia Helfer (Number Six) if either of them can manage an English accent.

Doh! Tricia never even came to mind. Her, with red hair & the catsuit... If she can do the accent, she would kick ass as Emma Peel...

Believe it or not, my first thought was it had to be better than the first Avengers film.

Red leather indeed.

In all honesty, I find myself curiously uninvolved with the notion of Whedon helming the Avengers to the big screen. For me he's beginning to have the aura of 'Been there, done that.'

Granted, he does seem to be a bit of a one-trick pony. But it would be nice to be proved wrong,
