There's a lot of speculation about the reappearance of a certain character in the last Dr. Who, and (due to wibbly wobbly timey wimey) how the timeline fits.

I think that we're seeing River Song post Silence in the Library. She's been brought back from the Library's virtual world, and her personality has been put into a clone or android body. My feeling is android, because she seemed a bit too relaxed about dropping into space near the start, but I'm probably wrong.

Now, an obvious objection to this is that the crash is referenced in River's "where are we in our timelines?" remarks in SitL, but this is where wibbly wobbly timey wimey come in - for some reason the timeline has shifted so that River wasn't there when she was needed, and the Church has brought her back from the dead to patch this hole.

I'm probably wrong, but it makes a certain amount of sense in Whovian terms, and if clones / androids have some sort of stigma it would explain the Bishop's remark about the Doctor not knowing what she is.

Anyone got any better ideas?

It makes a lot of sense; but I fear you are giving the BBC far more credit than they deserve in presenting us with a deeply thought out plot. This series has all the hallmarks of the Cylons' cunning plan: it looks cool and sounds great provided you don't think about it too much.

I'm just reminding myself I sat through The Happiness Patrol not once but twice...

I think "I don't want to go back to prison" provides an adequate explanation for the remark - the Bishop is also acting as her parole officer.
Your explanation is certainly possible, but I don't think there's any real need for it.

Current fannish thinking is that "what" River may be is a Time Agent...

Agreed, I just like the idea.

Maybe, but if so she presumably grew out of it.

That's a possibility but doesn't the fact that she's currently a doctor diasgree with that, when the Doctor refers to her as professor she's happy to find out that she will become one. Future tense, not past.

Unless that was just a cunning ploy to make him think that she is earlier in her timeline than she really is.
