An annoying complication
Jul. 17th, 2010 11:42 amWhen my mother died in 1995 the solicitors were supposed to see to liquidating her bank accounts, savings, etc., and we eventually got a couple of hundred quid from that source, which is about what we expected.
Except that today we received a £25 cheque for her; apparently her Premium Bonds were never cancelled and she's just won.
Needless to say there are rules about this - since she died more than a year ago the prize is invalid, and I now have to do a load of paperwork to claim back her money, which I suspect is no more than fifty or a hundred quid.
After all this time there's no point complaining to the solicitors, they seemed to do everything else correctly, but I could really wish that they'd sorted this out at the time - imagine if it had been £25,000 she'd won!
