The perils of living near a railway

I think I need to get out for a few hours. There are large numbers of workmen laying new track on the Hammersmith and City line right opposite my house, and whatever machine they're using is loud enough to do my head in. The Crossrail tunnel construction beyond that is actually quiet by comparison.

Ouch. I hate it when you can't get away from a noise like that.

I think they were using some sort of vibrating fork to settle stones in the track bed or something. Or maybe concrete.

Right now that noise has stopped, and all that I can see going on is a giant soil auger drilling deep holes, which is a lot quieter.
