REALLY obscure question aimed primarily at Demon users / ex-users who might be familiar with Turnpike. Not sure if any other ISP issued it as standard.

I used to have a Demon account and I'm still using Turnpike as my newsreader / email program though NTLworld is my current ISP. It's old, but it's rock solid and has never crashed or lost me a message. But sometime soon I'll be moving everything onto a new PC, and I want to keep the old messages, newsgroups, passwords etc.

What think I did last time was to do a fresh install of Turnpike on the new PC, then copy all the files across from the old one and just dump them into the Turnpike directory. After that it just did some sort of self-repair thing that took a couple of minutes and worked fine.

Does anyone know if I'm remembering it right?

Alternatively, is there a more modern XP compatible program that can import Turnpike files?

Later Found the FAQ - looks like it's copy files first, then install over the top of them

Was Turnpike replaced by Ameol?

No, Ameol was Cix, Turnpike was Demon.

I'm not convinced that will work.earlier versions of turnpike used to encrypt thier database.

So you could not just copy files between installs like that.

Richard Clayton used.to be active on usenet, so find the right group there and you'll probally still get .good support.

Usenet: as Richard said."may contain nuts"

Do you have a security key for your copy of Turnpike, assuming you purchased it? You'll need it to reinstall it in a new machine if you're now with NTLWorld. Turnpike is only free to Demon ISP customers; the package checks which ISP it is connected to on startup and will bomb out if the ISP is not Demon. You can buy a copy of Turnpike and transfer it from machine to machine, entering the key during installation but it's not cheap.

Aghh. I knew there was a way somehow

It's been about 10years since I left demon, and longer since a left windows hence turnpike

Damn - I'm sure I've done this at least once. Maybe it was copy the files across first, then install?

Or maybe I should give it up as a bad job and look at alternatives.

I've a feeling you're right. Maybe exporting or copying the relevant stuff is the best bet, I shall investigate.

Sounds like you're remembering it right. Just keep the old PC running in case the new install hiccups, and check out the forums on Demon Internet's site.

We're still using Turnpike; and I'm thinking of setting up XP compatability mode in Windows 7 to keep it running when we finally shut XP down later in the year or early next year.
