I've just learned that this catalogue was reprinted a few years ago and is still available fairly cheaply via Amazon.co.uk

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Stores-Limited-General-Price-1939-40/dp/1888777966

They've somehow reduced it to 1127 pages, which I suspect means that the index has gone - probably the best way to do it.

In view of this I've decided to cut back on scanning it - I'll still be putting the bits that interest me on line, but I'm not going to give it a very high priority.

And, in deference to [livejournal.com profile] vicarage, I'll try not to post about it too often!

I used to be interested by the reprint editions of antique Sears catalogues, but when I looked them over in the store, they were of selected pages. I finally got one because it was available for half a buck.

It mentions in the introduction that not all the pages are in there, but also introduces me to the interesting fact that the original catalog didn't have all the pages either. Their numbering system left many gaps.

There are pages I wish my little facsimile catalog had included, like stereo slides. I know they had them because I have a set of 50 slides that gives me a complete tour through the Sears plant. It was a promotional set, of course, and it was printed instead of photographic, but it's still pretty interesting.

My guess is that they chopped out all of the preliminary material and just copied the catalogue pages - the number of pages they list makes it seem most likely, and the type of the index is so small that it would be the practical way to do it. I'm tempted to buy a copy just to see how they did it, it's cheap enough.
