Thanks to [livejournal.com profile] vicarage I've booked a room at the Birmingham International Etap hotel for Eastercon - total cost under a third that of the main con hotel. I've never stayed there myself, but it turns out that two of my nieces have - they do sales work at trade fairs, shows, etc. and they stayed there a few years ago.

Their verdict - at the time it was a clean hotel, rooms are small but OK, the buffet breakfast is reasonably good. The only problem for room sharers they're aware of was a lack of privacy in the shower, it's a clear sliding glass door directly off the main room, not a separate bathroom.

The reviews seem to confirm this - mostly very positive, but you have to be aware that it's a no frills hotel with very basic facilities, that it's a good trek from the main hotel, and that there's no parking apart from the expensive airport car-park. Since I'm not planning to do anything except sleep and eat breakfast there, and a taxi will not cost a huge amount if I don't feel like walking, I don't see this as a problem.

later Forgot to say there's a shuttle bus service from the station, which is pretty near the hotel.

For Easter I shall be staying here -

Comfy beds, good food, views to die for. May not have an Eastercon attached, but I'm sure I will find things to do!

I'm looking forward to it.
Of course, with my luck with the weather, it could be snowing! But I have MacBook, a snug room with a view of the castle, I'll survive.

I've stayed at Etap hotels abroad, and they're fine. Not superb standard, but decent enough if all you're looking for is basically sleeping space.

I've stayed in the Etap in Southampton for Minamicon, and indeed will be doing so again this year. It has the basics: a room with a door that locks, a bed you can sleep on, and a shower with hot water.

If it weren't for us bringing the kids, and therefore having to be on site all the time, I'd have considered the Etap for Eastercon too.

How far is a good trek? I don't mind a bit of a walk in the morning and evening; cons tend to be heavy on the sitting and standing around, I find.

The best road route is about two miles since you have to go around three sides of a square about half a mile on a side, which is a bit annoying. It looks like you can walk it in about 1.5 miles - the route is rather twisty.

i'm here in Birmingham but i cant rate anything on that side of the city. i would say that there's a very nice cross-city train line that goes to the airport and crosses over to my side of town...
