I see the steam excursion trains are running from Paddington again - Oliver Cromwell just went by my house

pulling a load of carriages. Unfortunately it was on the track nearest the house and half concealed by the wall on the other side of the road, so I couldn't get a picture of my own.

They're lovely romantic things - but I've lived beside the railway all my life and I remember just how dirty things were before diesels and electrification - the bricks of this house are black from 200 years of soot!

Oh - that's a very handsome engine!

Just been looking it up - It's actually a fairly late design from 1951, and the last locomotive to be given a full overhaul by British Railways before they abandoned steam. I think Bittern, which does this run occasionally, is actually a prettier engine, but Cromwell has more of an aura of brute power.

It's more of a brute than Bittern, which sometimes does this run, but they're both very attractive engines.

Hmm. Pretty good, but personally I'm more taken by the Bullied's and some of Greasely's.

But I'm a simple soul.

I'm afraid I don't know enough about engines to comment - I've looked up the ones I see on the line, that's about it.

Nor do I really. It doesn't stop me having an uniformed preference though.

I blame my father - to many trips with him to the Bluebell railway in my youth (and of course Blackmore Vale)

Our Richard III tour group was standing on the hill at Bosworth field and we could see puffs of vapor from an engine down below. I suggested that it was a Stanley Steamer. Ar ar.
