The cover of The Struggle for Empire is fairly plain, just the title and author's name, and publisher's name on the spine.

I've just used an art program to make a reasonably good facsimile of it - don't know if the proportions are exactly right since I didn't have a ruler, and the font may be slightly off, but I think it's acceptable. It's basically just the text on a corduroy background, with the lettering overlaid with a gold texture.

Given that it's not hugely exciting, I think I'll put it on the back cover of the PDF and fairly small, and maybe use it as the cover if I produce an epub version (which will probably happen).

Does this seem reasonable?

Since it looks fairly typical for the period I see no reason not to use it for the front. If you want to make it more visually attractive for the PDF then a small embossed illustration in the bottom right would not look out of place even if that is deviating from the original.

I've got a nice "fleet of ships sailing into the sky" picture by Fred T. Jane for the front cover of the PDF; all other things being equal, I don't want to give it a dark cover since people may want to print it and something that dark will be a bastard if you have an inkjet printer.

At the moment I'm looking at this being about 5cm wide at the bottom RH corner of the back cover, with some explanatory text beneath it and a bigger illustration (also by Jane) at top left.

Sounds good to me.

And crossing fingers for an epub version.

It's a fairly short book, should be easy enough.

Hadn't thought about printing so good point. Using Fred T Janes work sounds great.
