Date: 2011-08-16 10:18 pm (UTC)They split all the time. During the 92 and 96 elections the Republicans effectively sheared off what eventually became the Reform Party. The dissidents usually only last a few election cycles before rejoining one or the other.
I have high, high hopes for the Tea Party. If they effectively split the undecideds and the Republicans, they may have staying power.
