The Stargate SG-1 collection is a new part-work on sale in the UK. Basically, you get a DVD and a magazine every couple of weeks, starting at £3.99 for the first issue then £7.99 for subsequent issues. It's a lot more expensive than the boxed sets, but I've never felt any great desire to get them anyway - it's a fun series, but there are others I like more.

I thought buying the issue would be a nice way to get the first episode, since I missed a lot of it for various reasons. Lo and behold, the CD has episodes 1.02 to 1.04, but 1.01 isn't there. This isn't made clear on the outer wrapper, unless you happen to be good at remembering episode titles (which I'm not). What's more, the only way to get it is to subscribe for several issues; you then get a file to keep them in, the original film, and the pilot episode. By my calculations, if you subscribe for even this long and then cancel (which takes another month!) you will have spent a lot more than the first boxed set and film cost.

Not really a surprise that it's a rip-off, apart from the first episode not being there - this'll teach me to look carefully before I buy. At least I'm only out £3.99...

We have a similar one going here but for Star Trek. It's $9.95AU for the first issue and then $19.95AU for every issue after that. By the time you collect them all you'd have spent four or five times you would have for the box sets.

And have you seen the Buffy rip offs as well? Fox or whoever, here in Australia, have released DVD based around certain characters 'Fred', 'Spike', etc and they're about $20.00 each and they contain three character based episodes. Spike, for example, has School Hard, Becoming or some other Spike episode - absolute rip off.

yep, noticed those and laughed VERY hard. Similar to the BTVS musical episode DVD, which costs £12.00 whereas you could eventually get the whole of season 6 including all of the "making of" extras for about £40.

The only thing I have that is even remotely like that is a Star Trek laserdisk called "Triple Tribble Trouble", which I've mentioned here before; The Trouble with Tribbles from original series, More Tribbles, More Trouble from the animated series, and Trials and Tribbleations from DS9. I'd probably buy that one if it was on DVD, since I have no interest in collecting the trek DVDs as a whole.

*raises hand embarassed*

I bought that musical episode too, then realised it didn't even have the sing-along features and making of that the season box did.

Glancing through a friend's mag, they look nice at least. Might have to steal borrow them off him for 'research' purposes at some point.

Yes, it's quite pretty, but I'm fairly sure I can live without it.
