It is half-past eleven at night a week before Guy Fawkes and it is only in the last ten minutes or so that it has stopped sounding like a full-dress artillery barrage outside. The really worrying thing is that since there started being a crackdown on legal firework sales by local shops, there has grown up an illegal trade in things that might as well be military weapons - loud, smelly and dangerous. I think it was when I used to have cats that I went off fireworks terminally - nothing like sitting with terrified moggies to jade one.
And yet the ones that just fizz and make stars can be so very pretty...
