I've never liked Haloween, and while I'm a fan of firework displays, the current trend for more BANG and less oooh is clearly bad. At least if the pyrotechnics produce colours rather than sound it doesn't disturb those not watching the display.
Fireworks are hardly things for the back garden anyway, as few ever obey the safety rules, as your sad story shows, so I'm much keener on public displays.
