Any other brits seen the current Halifax building society advert on TV and instantly been reminded of the Crimson Mutual Assurance Society?

Kept waiting for the building to sail off the edge of the world or something.

I do keep expecting Howard to break out into "It's fun to charter an accountant"

Exactly. Then there's that sudden change from the ship with sails bit to the Titanic "standing at the bow" thing, maybe it should have hit an iceberg.

Didn't know what you meant when I first read your post, because I'd never seen the advert. But I saw it last night, and yes, it's very, very... I'll be polite and say "inspired" by the bit out of whichever Python film it was. (Meaning of Life?)

Yes, it's Meaning of Life. Brilliant film, and that's one of the best bits of it.

Seems an appropriate rip-off, really, given the way the British building society market has changed into such a cut-throat business. Maybe they'll do a second version showing them privateering on the Spanish Main, taking down any 'Abbey' vessels they find. (Note for non-UK readers -- Abbey are another building soc-cum-bank, currently being taken over by a Spanish bank.)

It's fun to charter an accountant,
and sail the wide accountant sea.
To find, explore, the funds off shore,
and skirt the shoals of bankruptcy.
It can be manly in insurance,
we'll up your premiums semi-annually.
It's all tax-deductable,
we're fairly incorruptible,
and sailing on the wide accountant sea!

One of the best short films in the world. Ever. And yes I was reminded.

Dragged my copies of Space 1889 and Heliograph out last night. Dammit, this could be such a good TV series now.

Incidentally, I really should add you to my friends list. May I?

Sure - I'm about three months behind on updating my friends list though, so it won't be mutual until I get round to it.

Gilliam should sue...

Then again, after Brazil, he could have made a fortune several times over from suing ad execs who ripped him off. Or, knowing Gilliam's luck with money, bankrupted himself and his family to unto seven generations.

Ahh, Crimson Permanent Assurance... the sketch which involves, IIRC, Arthur Dent being skewered through an executive chair, and Max Headroom comitting a perfect Python suicide out of the window (it's the little hop that makes it perfect).

Well look at the track record. Baron Munchausen, Don Quixote... etc.

And people aren't wearing enough hats.

Damn, it was Permanent, not Mutual, wasn't it.

Only just now saw it and it's a very close ripoff indeed.
As someone else said, them taking file drawer pot shots at other banks/building societies would rock. ;o)

There's probably a very bizarre RPG idea in here somewhere...
