Submarines?

Odd question - do American submarines have the ship's name or number on the conning tower or fins, or anywhere else it can be seen from a distance?

I think they have a small number on the conning tower, which probably relates to a specific vessel. But that said, a quick glance through google image search suggests they don't seem to carry any identification.

Which would make sense, I would think it would give away too much potentially valuable intel to an enemy if they could tell exactly which vessel in a class they were looking at.

Looks like the number is placed on the sail temporarily while in dock, but not otherwise.

Thanks - I couldn't find anything either, which made me think the answer's no. And ckd seems to have found some negative proof.
