Following interviews today, it looks like one of the other technicians here has been appointed as my successor - no official announcement yet, but I've been told verbally, and it's one of two that could do the job. I'm now reasonably confident that things won't fall apart the second I leave, which is a big relief.

I totally understand that. I worry about what will happen to some of the thing I do, and patients I see, when I retire.

My worry is more that they will keep bugging me by phone, email etc. once I've retired - REALLY do not want to keep solving laboratory problems until I'm old(er) and grey(er). Unless there is a VERY good consultation fee, of course!
