Forgot to say that while I was watching paint dry (e.g. reinstalling Windows 98) last night I was also watching some episodes of the Forever Knight vampire series - got 1st and 2nd season very cheap on eBay, now I'm beginning to understand why they're cheap. I've seen five or six now and I'm still waiting for one (apart from the two-parter at the beginning of the series) where a vampire turns out to be the villain, which is bizarre considering that they're showing a large vampire population in the town and they're presumably killing people. I'm not saying I'm not enjoying them, because they're adequate if somewhat formulaic fun, but I'm not sure I'll bother to get the third season unless it gets a lot better.

Lacroix was the closest thing to a vampire villain on the show until the end of season 3, and even then, he was never *all* that bad. Hm...wait...I think there was a minor episode mid season 3 that featured a vampire villain, but I can't recall the plot.

I enjoyed the show the way I enjoy Pez - tasty, but far from filling. The vampires in Forever Knight are closer to Anita Blake vamps, but not nearly as scary.

Also, for what it's worth, the star of the show used to call it Forever Angst.

I presume that Lacroix makes a comeback then, since he was killed in the double-parter. Or was that story the extent of his villainy? If it isn't too much of a spoiler, of course.

I never saw the double-parter, so I didn't know he'd been "killed."

No need to lend me Firefly, as I've tried it on BitTorrent, and didn't like it.

You sure? The first episode (as shown on US TV), The Train Robbery (or whatever it's called) is possibly the worst of the series, since it was filmed at the last minute, so if that's a major part of your decision-making you might want to give it more of a chance.

Assume you got back from Bath OK - was there the bus problem you feared?

The episode was called Serenity, started with a battle scene, then rescuing boxes from a wrecked spacecraft. It didn't grab me at all

I was indeed an hour late getting home

IIRC, most of the vampire "community" (in Toronto, at least) had figured out that killing humans on a regular basis, especially in a large city and with a large enough vamp community in said city, would draw too much attention from modern-day humans to the fact that vampires existed, and so most reluctantly agreed to get their blood from more nonlethal means. What do you think they were drinking at Jeannette's bar? :)

Key word here being "most." LaCroix, although he also did his best to keep a low profile, was willing to kill if he thought it was either justified or necessary, and there were a few eps with vampire villains. Second season's got one with a savage serial killing vamp who's wandered the globe and is, essentially, a vampire version of Redjac from the original Star Trek, complete with revelation that he was Jack the Ripper (and, of course, Nick is indirectly responsible for his creation).

Third season? Definitely a mixed bag. The actors playing Schanke, Jeannette, and the second season's police lieutenant left the show. Nick got a new partner, who later joined the cast of Andromeda, and we got another vampire with a conscience who seemed to be being groomed to take over for Geraint Wyn-Davies in the early part of the season. On the plus side, character actor Blu Mankuma joined the cast as Nick's third prescinct commander in as many seasons, and Jeannette makes a return appearance having accidentally found what Nick's been looking for. The show's last couple of episodes, although not a two-part story, certainly have a more unambiguous ending for most of the characters than Angel did.

Thanks - I'll see what I think by the end of 2nd season.

I must admit, having watched them when they were showing late night on Sky, I really wasn't at all taken by the third season. The formula had worn thin, several of the actors left, and all that angst really didn't seem to be going anywhere.
