Quick question for anyone who went to the Florida worldcon in 1992.

Am I right to think that a lot of people took the opportunity to stay on a couple of days to see a shuttle launch?

If so, how far in advance of the con did you know that the shuttle was being launched?

Some people certainly. But we only found out about it at the con, and couldn't see anything while on the drive to the airport.

I'm sure some folks with open schedules did so, but it was almost a week after the convention. (I'm surprised they did it, given how close this was to Hurricane Andrew.)
They did tours to the facilities during the con.
I think they mentioned it early on--they set the shuttle launch schedules early in the year, as I recall. (I was working the art show and the dealers room, so my experience of show events is slightly limited.)

Thanks, that's useful, someone is trying to find out how much advance warning there was.

Yes, a small group of us did. I don't really remember the details now but I think we went to the Kennedy Space Centre a couple of days after the con as a regular trip and we booked the tickets then (for the following week). I do not know if Eddie or any of the others knew about the launch before we went on that first trip but if not that may explain why others didn't know about it until after.

And it was the best few moments of the entire fortnight may I say - absolutely awesome.

I can't remember when I heard about the shuttle, I think it may have been only after I got to the con. Either way, I was part of the group who went to Kennedy on the 8th Sept. and flew home on the Friday, 11th. According to NASA, the launch was on the 12th.

It sounds like nobody really knew before the con, which is what I was trying to determine. Thanks!

I knew before the con, but I was at the World Space Congress then. I think they changed the dates a little, but I caught it. TBH, I was rather underwhelmed, as from 6 miles away the disconnect between the sound and the vision is rather odd. You could get tickets for my viewing area 2-3 days beforehand.
