My brother-in-law found this on the roof while cleaning gutters. I'm not sure if it's alive, dead, or hibernating, but it appears to be a ladybird with a black body and rather nice colour on the spots.

Ladybird Ladybird

My first attempt at putting a picture into a livejournal gallery - to be honest I'm not very impressed, think I'll stick to Photobucket.

Is that a reflection or is the shell a bit crumpled?

Re posting the photos: Do you use a client or type directly into your browser? I used to link to my SmugMug account but my client (I use Semagic) will do it all for me. I make the post, link to a pic on my PC and Semagic uploads the pic and updates the link so all is happy. I wouldn't use the LJ scrapbook at all except for that.

The shell did look a bit crumpled - tried taking one from the other side but it didn't look clear on the computer. I think it was either dead or hibernating, didn't want to prod it too hard to find out.

Here's a good page that shows some more strange ladybirds (http://creatures.ifas.ufl.edu/beneficial/lady_beetles.htm). Yours isn't listed there, but there are one or two that are similar.

I think it's a traditional 2 spot ladybird, with slightly abnormal colours. They come in a black spot on red variety and a red spot on black variety, like so:

Pretty little thing, anyhow.

Thanks - that's a lovely site.

When and if I can find someone selling a crash helmet that actually fits me again (which seems to be rather difficult at the moment) I'll look at getting one that deep red/maroon colour, it's about the same as my last motorbike and I always liked that.

I only use ScrapBook if I want to friends-lock photos (previews of shoots etc.), otherwise I prefer flickr.
