Maybe. Or maybe they were banking on audience growth that isn't there, since there are now plenty of other authors writing fantasy for this audience.

They just shouldn't have done the reprint. Then they'd only be facing returns of about 10%, which is a healthy amount.

Estimating sales of any book is difficult. This kind of thing happens all the time, but it doesn't usually make the news. Its hard to boo-hoo too much about $600million in profits.

Though on second thought... can you even return hardbacks? I think you can only remainder them, which means the bookstores are the ones who'll have to suffer. The publisher should be fine.
