I own two freeview recorders. Both are fairly old. And both seem to have died since the last time I used them. I can understand why the one that was always plugged in might have died. But the other one was in my bedroom, I never plug it in unless I want to watch TV in bed or something, and it was working fine the last time I used it.

So, slight panic about Dr. Who tomorrow since I'll be eating with my family at air time, but I'm sure I'll somehow cope.

That's a coincidence. My Freeview box has died within the last few days too. Luckily I only kept it as a back-up in case my Sky box or dish should go u/s (and also with the idea that one day I would get around to watching all the stuff I had recorded on it back when it was my only box, but realistically that was never likely to happen).

Presumably if the worst came to the worst, you could always watch Dr. Who on iPlayer. Anyway, don't let it spoil your Christmas dinner!

Yes, iPlayer occurred to me once I stopped panicking. Since I don't tend to record much, I've just ordered a Freeview HD receiver that can record to a USB stick if desired - a 16gb stick ought to have enough capacity for the occasional episode of Dr. Who, Sherlock, etc. Cost £20 which isn't too bad, if it's OK I'll get another for the bedroom.
