Misco are selling the Xerox Phaser 6100DN colour laser pretty cheaply. It has a network port, USB, and parallel, and it's a duplex printer, which is something I'd rather like. Resolution 600 or 1200 DPI. Down side looks to be weight and power consumption (35W in standby, which seems excessive). I'm not looking for photographic-quality reproduction, just basic colour printing, and the price is certainly right.

I'm VERY tempted - anyone know any horror stories?

It weighs a ton (well, 32kg), too. Shipping could sting a bit.

Not a bad price, indeed.

Misco aren't usually too awful in shipping costs, but I'd obviously need to check.

Toner replacement?

It's always worth checking how much toner is going to cost. One place I worked for bought a Lexmark colour laser printer really cheaply only to discover that a single colour cartridge cost almost as much as the printer, but isn't that what Lexmarks are famous for?

Absolutely. The US costs to replace all four carts would be $600.

Including VAT it's £60 for the black toner, £70 for the colour, so replacing all four at once would be £270, about $450. There's also a drum at £110.

Believe me, I'm well aware of the costs of these things - it's the main thing that puts me off buying one. But as they go the Xerox prices seem moderately low, and I think I trust them slightly more than HP to produce a reliable product.

Should add that I don't expect to be a high volume user; my typical use would be a batch of CD-ROM labels, printing out occasional PDFs, flyers for conventons, that sort of thing.

Average use on a black toner can be anythimng from 4,000 to 10,000 pages per cartridge, colour is about 8,000 to 12,000 per set of three cartridges. and the average replacement time on the drums at work is about 220,000 pages - there are also fuser, and transfer kits, depending on the type of transfer the printer uses.

Bearing in mind that we have about 30 Mono Laserprinters and 6 Colour printers in my office, and they all vary dramatically depending on who uses them and paper sises that get put through them. one of the A3 Lasers we use for Draugting goes through about a full set of cartridges in 3 weeks. where as the the printer in the Library lasts about 18 months per cartridge.

Do they quote a cost per sheet in colour and mono?

35W on standby! Crikey.

They may mean "powered up but not actually printing", e.g. immediately after printing a page, rather than all the time. My current printer goes down to five watts or so on standby, then after printing keeps the motor running for 10 minutes or so, which is presumably eating a lot more power.
