For anyone who hadn't already noticed, the Mac version of Google Earth is now working on OS-X 10.3.9

It's pretty... - the maps are the same as the PC version, of course, but the controls look a little cleaner. Not completely easy to use with a touchpad, but I just need to get the hang of it a bit more. A bit jerky at first, but that's the maps not being cached yet more than a speed problem. However, this is a 1.2 ghz G4 with 1.25gb RAM, with slower machines YMMV.

And YAAAAAAAAAYYYYY!

New icon in its honour - it's the PC version though since I'm not 100% sure how to do a Mac screen shot.

Later: Just to clarify things, there's been a Mac version for a few weeks but it only ran on the latest version of OS-X; I tried it, and it simply wouldn't run on anything earlier. This one runs on the last version, 10.3.9, so you don't have to upgrade to Tiger to use it. And that saves about a hundred pounds.

Not sure if there are any other changes, but anyone who got the earlier version might want to check.

Cmd-Shift-3 to get the whole screen. Cmd-Shift-4 to get a crosshair with which to drag-mark a section of the screen to capture. Hit Space and the crosshair changes to a little camera you can click on a window with to get all of that window.

I've been using it on 10.4.4 since it came out, and noticed no problems.

The first Mac version didn't run on anything earlier than 10.4, and much as I like Google Earth I'm not prepared to upgrade to Tiger just to run it.

It runs just fine on my 550MHz G4 laptop. I suspect that the main speed limitiing factor is you Internet connection.

An even bigger limitation is how busy Google's server is, I suspect, since I have a 2 megabit line. I used it again tonight and there was no jerkiness at all, I think that (a) I have more images and maps cached now and (b) the server wasn't so busy.

As an addendum to my previous post, doing some things with it does seem to overheat the graphics chip in my Titanium Powerbook. I was doing a nice fly-through, following the Trans-Canada Highway through the Rocky mountains, when my laptop just quit, and there was a definite odour of over-heated electronics. It wouldn't start up again until I'd given it a chance to cool down. (Seems to be working fine again, but I haven't gone back to try anything too fancy with Google Earth since.)
