USB microphones

ffuturesI want to use my iBook as an audio oscilloscope, using a VERY nice freeware program called AudioXplorer, but it doesn't have a normal audio input jack and the built-in microphone is too insensitive.
You can get a USB gadget called an iMic that adds audio ports, but it seems slightly overkill for what I want to do. Anyone know a cheaper alternative?
