Another fantasy RPG Bundle - Mazes FRP
Aug. 5th, 2024 08:07 pmA new bundle for Mazes FRP, by Chris O'Neill, which is designed as a simple dungeon-bashing fantasy RPG intended for easy episodic playing at conventions etc. rather than prolonged campaigns.

I think this has to be the simplest cover art I've seen in any rule book since the Traveller era. Internal art is black and white drawings with a fairly simplistic style, and manages to avoid the usual traps of ludicrous spiky armour, chainmail bikinis, etc. I'm not in love with one of the core concepts, the idea that the referee doesn't roll dice or role-play major NPCs - they're supposed to be given to players to run when necessary. For me a lot of the fun of running RPGs is the moments when I get out the big bucket of dice (OK, smallish cloth bag in fact, you can fit a LOT of D6s into a relatively small bag) and get to play the 500-year old senior Dragon of the Crimson Claw Bank, the Damsel in Distress who is actually the plausible psychopath responsible for all of the team's problems, and other fun characters. Without the opportunity to do that I think I'd lose a lot of my interest in the genre.
Having said that, it looks like a reasonably good system and it's pretty cheap. I'm not very interested because I've long since given up on dungeon-bashing RPGs, but if you want one it's worth a look.
