For tree lovers...

A big online map of London trees (815,916 of them on streets and some public areas; private gardens etc. and the parks aren't covered) was pointed out by vicarage this evening; basically you can zoom in, click on the trees to see what they are, and see a Google street view of the tree in question, etc.. Rather a lot of London Plane Trees, of course, but it does bring home just how many trees there are, and why they have to send out street cleaning vans so often in autumn. And if you're allergic to a particular type you will know to steer clear of them...

Later - Forgot to say that several boroughs aren't covered yet, and that there if you check the "about" box at the top of the first screen it says that the correct total for London including parks, gardens etc. is more like eight million.

Around the start of lockdown, the local council in Guildford planted a whole load of trees near me. There must be about 100 on the patch of ground between two slip roads leading to the A3. I think they've all died. I did read somewhere about the microbiota of tree roots and affect how a tree grows, and has to be taken into account when planting saplings.

Curiously, the trees they planted in my street at about the same time have mostly survived.

Can't say. They didn't line long enough to produce any leaves

Actually, walking past just now, several of the tubes do have scraggly saplings sticking out still. Whether that are still alive is another matter.
