Anyone want to bet against the possibility that the software needed to make this work will require really recent versions of the OS etc, thus forcing internet users to buy new phones etc.?
I doubt very much the chap at 10 Downing street, or the blokes in Parliament have any clue what would be needed to implement this. The lobbyists behind it however...
Given that I spent the better part of the past week dealing with people who have to make a PHONE claim in Universal Credit, because they either have no internet access, no smartphone and/or no digital skills, I foresee this being a disaster for a huge slew of people.
What shall we do this month, darling? 1. Feed our child. 2. Pay the rent. 3. Upgrade both our phones to the latest model, so we can install that nice Mr Starmer's spiffing new digital ID.
I get that having some form of ID which isn't a fekking driving license or passport would be useful*. But why does it have to be digital and why will it be compulsory?
*My brother wrote to his MP once complaining he couldn't buy a folding pocket knife because he couldn't "prove he could drive in a foreign country". They never responded.
