Anyone able to identify artists from the Russian-Japanese war? I've got an article from 1904 with several pictures but the artist or artists aren't named. Anyone know? Waves in the first look like the style of Hokusai, but of course he died much earlier. One of the later ones reminds me of Fred T. Jane's illustrations for The Angel of the Revolution.

Later: Added all of the pictures.

I can't read them, but it seems to be "artists". The two- and three-character items on the edges of or away from the larger blocks of text are signatures -- you can tell by the hankos, the ones in squares made by a seal -- and they're different from one another.

That third picture is quite interesting. You can see where the motion-line conventions of anime came from; it's amusing that the commentator thought it so unusual as to require mention.

Thanks - I had a feeling that there was more than one artist. The one with the ship hitting a mine is interesting too, that's the one that looks like it was inspired by Fred T. Jane

just curious to know why you are looking into obscure Japanese artists right on the back of the monorail push!

btw - thanks for the "meme free zone" - because I became sick of it the first time I saw one - and that was without realising what the f*** a meme was.

You don't think it's interesting? Well, tastes differ...

In fact I'm taking a rest from Elvis for a few days and using the time to scan interesting stuff from some copies of Pearson's Magazine I recently picked up - eventually this stuff will be on the CD-ROM I publish. So far this weekend I've scanned the monorail and Japanese print article and about 30 period adverts, and I have another railway article and an 1896 submarine article to go. What I'm not finding, unfortunately, is any period SF or fantasy that I don't have that isn't still in UK copyright - I've got the first printing of The Food of the Gods, for example, but I can't use it because Wells is still in Euro copyright.

Ive no doubt it is interesting, retro-tech is something I find interesting, whether it is Victorian Steam Age or Deadlands-esque or WWII mixed in with the bizarre.

It's interesting, to me, to see war portrayed this recently in such a traditional style.

These are fantastic. I'd never seen anything before that bridged the gap between traditional Japanese illustration and modern Manga violence quite so neatly. Particular fan of the first one - I want a giant poster now...

(How good is the print quality of the originals? Do you think they could survive being blown up?)

It's about a third of a page and not particularly high resolution so I doubt it.

If I can find out who the artist is that might be a good starting point for getting a bigger version.
