ffutures: (both snakes)

Got home to find the latest batch of corn snake eggs hatching - so far one is out of the shell, the others are still in their eggs. So in the next few days I need to get eight boxes with a hiding place, water source etc. sorted out.

Did I know this was coming? Yes, of course I did. They've been in the incubator for the last two months.

Did I remember to organise the bits and pieces I need for this - film cans, bits of sponge for the water, etc.? No, of course I didn't.

So tomorrow will begin with a quick sprint round to the camera shop to get film cans, the pound shop to get some plastic boxes, etc. etc.

Not a problem - but I'm annoyed with myself for forgetting.

Since the death of the rats the wilson houshold have been pet-less

What are corn snakes like as pets? -
Would they be suitable for a 11 year old?
How hard are they to look after?
Any other tips?

They're not exactly cuddly pets - at this stage they're like a wriggly ball-point pen with a gift for escapology and a habit of biting anything that scares them - it's harmless but startling. When they're bigger they're very pretty snakes and much easier to handle, but snakes simply aren't affectionate pets and keeping mice in the deep freeze tends to be a bit of a turn-off for most people. I really couldn't recommend a baby snake for an 11-year old, I'm afraid.

But in any case I've already got a buyer lined up, a local pet shop has bought the last 20 or so and wants more.

Can I have a box-full to take back with me to Boston? We have a live mouse problem in the office, and with people allergic to cats in the office I figure snakes are the best solution.

Your government won't let you import them - not sure why, but I think there's a fear that they will pick up viruses or parasites in captivity, then maybe escape and spread them to the wild population in the USA.
