FF X Art

One of the things I need for FF X is artwork depicting dragons. Needless to say this needs to be copyright-expired or otherwise placed into the public domain, since I can't afford to pay for work. As regular readers will know I'm better at manips etc. than original art, so drawing my own is probably out.

I've found a few things already - pictures of coins, St. George and the Dragon, and so forth - but not nearly as much as I'd like, and most of what I've found on line shows dragons fighting. I need a broader range of subjects.

I may have a go at making some models and photographing them - I can't use commercial figures since they will be copyright. Annoyingly I used to have a couple of fairly large dragon models I scratch-built in my D&D days, but they seem to have gone missing at some point in the last ten years or so. Other than that, any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Later: I've found some free sources on line, and with a little manip ended up with this:

Since he's a bishop he should have his wings tied, still trying to work out where the cords should go. I also need to do something about the colour, it's wrong for a male.

Would something like this (http://www.drowtales.com/ua/main.php?g2_itemId=13286) fit your bill, or would it be too humanoid? [livejournal.com profile] chaypeta would probably let you use it for free, if you asked nicely and gave an aknowledgement in the credits.

Alternatively I could offer you this picture (http://cheeko-001.deviantart.com/art/Annoyance-52638734), which I actually commissioned for a story I self-published.

Pretty, both of them!

They're neither really quite what I'm after; the first one simply doesn't look like the dragons in the story, the second one is about right in appearance but no dragon from this setting would be that casual anywhere near a human - humans are the enemy, or at best the monsters that the dragons aren't currently fighting.

All right. No worries then. :)

And I forgot to say thanks, for which many apologies.

There is a website, www.clipart.com, where you can (for a fee) download art that is copyright-free. They have access to the Dover catalog, among others, and I've found it to be an invaluable resource. (They do ask that you tell people where you got the images.) There is quite a range of work, including a lot of dragons.

The real trick will be to give them the proper hats, won't it?

I can probably do that with manips - they don't all wear them all the time, so if it doesn't work they can do without.

To be honest, given your source material, have you thought of looking at late 19th century dinosaur artwork? Say Benjamin Waterhouse Hawkins or one of his successors? (http://academic.brooklyn.cuny.edu/geology/chamber/hawkins.html)

There may also be some early artwork Edgar Rice Burroughs stories like Out of Time's Abyss and the Pellucidar books - I know there are free text versions out there - I presume the same is true of the artwork.

I know the sort of thing you mean, but I think I'm looking for something with more of a dragon feel - more of a lithe sinuous body, not so solid and heavily built.

It might be worth asking [livejournal.com profile] frostfox if she has something suitable, or will draw you something.

Ditto [livejournal.com profile] aeshna_uk, who has drawn more than a few dragons in her time.
