This 1930s clip of possible future fashions was posted to [livejournal.com profile] anachrotech; http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U9eAiy0IGBI

So I thought it was high time I put the 1893 article Future Dictates of Fashion on line:

http://www.forgottenfutures.com/library/fashion/fut_fash.htm

A study of the evolution of clothing from 1893 to the 1970s. To save space on my site the larger versions of the graphics have been omitted, but I think they're large enough to get the idea.

I'm guessing that clothing fashions are among the hardest things to successfully predict, because they are based on weird ideological associations (the dubious association of two-piece brief swimwear with Atomic Doom being the most obvious), changing moral conceptions (particularly involving what constitutes "indecency," which can move in either direction on long historical cycles, to wit the nipple-baring fashions of about three centuries ago), and pure whim). I'd say that, on the whole, one could pick any random fashion, designate it for a particular future period, and be as likely to be accurate as by any other method.

There do seem to be some cyclical trends, e.g. Goths were a throwback to earlier styles, but on the whole you're right.
