Forgot to say that the washing machine repair went reasonably smoothly - same guy as I saw on the first or second service visit last time, didn't seem particularly surprised to be back so soon until I told him that the previous machine had been replaced and that the current one was less than a year old. Turned out to be a thermal fuse blown due to overheating - not entirely sure how it happened, but the most likely guess is that the fan somehow got blocked. He couldn't find anything blocking it, but maybe something was stuck in the air vent until I emptied the machine. I'm now VERY glad I got the extended warranty, if this is the sort of thing that happens.

Still pining for the old Whirlpool washer/dryer, which went 12 years with (as far as I can remember) only one service call. REALLY wish I'd kept the warranty going on that one, since it was a swap out policy.

Amazing isn't it, just how useless recently build consumer goods are.

We have a fridge in the kitchen that is older than me. Sure, it's broken down a couple of times, but each time it's been relatively easy to fix, because it's designed to be fixable.

Actuallyt fridges are one of the rare things where new is good - the old ones are energy hogs.

Really? Damn. The newish one my mum got for the shop got to be 4 or 5 years old, and started breaking down constantly.
