Well, two out of the five MEPs I contacted assured me they'd vote against. The other three haven't bothered to call back. It may be wishful thinking to translate this into two noes and three abstentions...
Not apropros of the Telecoms issue (about which I know nothing), I was curious what you think about the "knife culture" deal that's been going on in your neighborhood of late. I find the whole thing perplexing, but when I hear the BBC pieces on it, a lot of people simply seem to accept the premise that (1) knife crime is increasing (although apparently the data do not support this) and (2) it's entirely unreasonable for anyone to be carrying a knife, ever.
Maybe I show my American-ness here, but it's perplexing to me that I could potentially see jail time in the UK for carrying the knife that I have on me right now. I would also be really annoyed to have to try to open and then break down packing materials with, say, my hands.
Damned if I know why this is currently such big news - but it's been illegal to carry most knives in the UK for many years. All switchblades, most locking knives, most long blades, etc. have beem illegal for umpteen years and nobody seems to have a huge problem with it. You can still carry basic penknives up to 2" or so blade, use craft knives and the type of knife used to open cartons, etc.
To carry without a specific reason (other than self-defence). You can still buy a large kitchen knife (if you are over 18?) and carry it home, or take your sword to a re-enactment event.
(But flick knives and butterfly knives have stricter rules, IIRC.)
